Young companies
in deep tech, AI and software

I’m an investment analyst in the Key Technologies team at BOM, the Brabant Development Agency. I look at young companies that build in Brabant, usually in their first rounds of funding.

How I look at a company

When a deck comes in, I start with the problem, the way the customer feels it. The product comes after that. If I can explain the problem to a colleague without the deck in front of me, I’m getting somewhere.

Then the people. Early on, the team is most of the company, so I want to know what brought these founders to this problem, and why it can be solved now. With deep tech I try to understand the science first, and then who will buy it. With software I like to talk to the people who use it every day. And with AI, I try the product myself whenever I can.

A first conversation with me is mostly questions. I read the deck beforehand, so we don’t have to go through it slide by slide, and we can spend the time on what isn’t in it yet.

More and more of the founders I meet build with AI, and that changes what they need from us. I wrote about that under AI applications.
